Research in Equal Education
The Research Department plays a vital role in EE’s advocacy and activism by producing evidence-based
analyses that inform campaigns and strategies. Its work is guided by the lived experiences of members
and focuses on themes including education funding, spatial justice, and safety.
The Junior Researcher is expected to focus on education policy monitoring, with an emphasis on
community safety and psychosocial support. This role is ideal for an early-career researcher who is eager
to develop expertise in tracking and analysing education policies and legislation, as well as addressing
challenges learners face regarding mental health and school safety.
Key Responsibilities
Research
● Monitor and analyse activities of the Department of Basic Education, as well as national and
provincial legislatures, focusing on key education policies and developments.
● Monitoring of local and international education news, education research, education policy and
law reform related to thematic area.
● Track education policy implementation and progress.
● Support submissions and reports for parliamentary committees, ensuring alignment with EE’s
advocacy goals.
● Research and develop reports on school safety and psychosocial support systems.
● Monitor media coverage related to education and community safety and share relevant insights
with the team.
● Produce a range of research outputs, including policy briefs, monitoring tools, and popular
education materials.
Collaboration, Stakeholder and Public Engagement, Media:
● Collaborate with EE’s Organising teams to conduct primary research, and integrate research
findings into advocacy work.
● Assist the communications team by contributing to social media campaigns, drafting media
statements, and developing messaging documents.
● Engage with stakeholders, including school staff, government officials, and civil society partners.
● Support internal education efforts by presenting research findings to EE members and staff.
● Supporting community engagement in relevant EE offices, including visiting schools in the
province
Qualifications and Competencies
● Bachelor’s degree in Politics, Sociology, Psychology, Social Work or related fields.
● 1-2 years work experience in policy research, civil society, or community-based organisations.
● Experience or knowledge of school safety, mental health, and psychosocial support.
● Strong writing and research skills with an ability to present findings clearly in accessible
language.
● Passion for social justice and addressing educational inequalities.
