Equal Education launches FIX OUR SCHOOLS: AN EXHIBITION
On Thursday, 30 August 2012, Equal Education (EE) will launch FIX OUR SCHOOLS: AN EXHIBITION from 12h30-13h30 at the Central Methodist Mission Church in Cape Town. The exhibition will expose the state of South Africa’s education system and chronicle EE’s work.
Equal Education Condemns Violent Attack on Mpumalanga Learner
On Wednesday, 22 August 2012, eNews Channel Africa showed footage of a male teacher violently attacking a Grade 9 learner at Hoerskool Patriot in Mpumalanga. Equal Education (EE) condemns the attack and calls for the immediate dismissal of the teacher.
CIVIL SOCIETY ORGANISATIONS WELCOME ANNOUNCEMENT OF COMMISSION OF INQUIRY INTO KHAYELITSHA POLICE
Today the Premier of the Western Cape Helen Zille announced the establishment of a commission of inquiry (CoI) to investigate problems with policing by the South African Police Service (SAPS) in Khayelitsha. This follows years of sustained campaigning by our organisations and members, many of whom continue to experience the effects of a failing police and criminal justice system. While the CoI is welcomed the terms of reference fail to include the City of Cape Town’s Metro Police – an integral part of policing in Khayelitsha.

KwaZulu-Natal Education MEC Continues to Illegally Lock Out Late-coming Learners
Equal Education (EE) has received reports that in June 2011 KwaZulu-Natal education MEC Senzo Mchunu issued a departmental circular instructing principals to lock out late-coming learners. EE has sent a letter to the MEC calling for the circular to be retracted immediately.

On 21 June 2012 the abovementioned group of civil society organisations wrote an open letter to the Minister of Basic Education requesting her to convene an urgent meeting to discuss the deepening crisis in education and the ways in which civil society can work with the Department of Basic Education to find workable solutions to this crisis.
