On Sunday (6 February) Equal Education had a braai in the Manyanani Peace Park in A-Section Khayelitsha, an event to open the year and welcome back all the Equalisers from their holidays.
We had a very good turnout. With catering only for four hundred people, we actually ended up having to break the boerewors rolls in half. There was also a nice turnout from outside Khayelitsha, including Kraaifontein and Bonteheuwel.
It was a fun event with games, music, sport, singing, hip-hop performances and reunions of friends. At the end there was some serious discussion about the campaigns ahead, too.
The Peace Park is a nice facility, with a braai area, grass lawns and some equipment to play on. However, a downside was seeing water bubbling up from the ground forming rancid pools, which young kids run through. There is also a lot of broken glass, particularly around the braai area. This is dangerous when kids are often in the park bare foot. The City of Cape Town should do a much better job maintaining the facility.
