EE will be hosting a seminar on Thursday 12th September at UWC (Great Hall 1) at 5:30pm: SADTU – Part of the problem? Or part of the solution? A discussion on the role of teacher unions in the struggle for quality and equal education.
This seminar will be a robust and frank discussion on the role of teacher unions in the struggle for quality and equal education. EE recognises teacher unions, SADTU in particular, as being central to the transformation of education in South Africa. EE has always sought a close and cooperative relationship with teacher unions, on the basis of progressive principles. EE regards the right to join a trade union and bargain collectively as a fundamental right. Voices in society tend to blame SADTU for all the woes of South African education, but EE has never supported such an approach. However, the teacher unions, like all institutions need to be debated openly and critically. EE is holding this seminar as part of a program of robust seminars that discuss critical issues facing South African education and the country as a whole.
The current participants are:
- Jonovan Rustin – Provincial Secretary of SADTU
- Jan Theron – Formerly General Secretary of Food and Allied Workers Union (FAWU); Currently senior researcher at UCT
- Nick Taylor – Head of the National Education Evaluation and Development Unit
_We look forward to seeing you there.
