It is with great concern that we learnt of the shooting of Andile Lili, chairperson of the Ses’khona People’s Rights Movement, outside his house in Khayelitsha, Cape Town, on Wednesday night. He is reportedly in a critical condition.

Ses’khona have voiced their belief that this was a politically motivated assassination attempt.

We acknowledge that sometimes these shootings may just be criminal behaviour but this incident fits an intolerable pattern of apparent political assassinations in parts of the country.

Recently, in a statement, EE and partner organisations expressed grave concern at political violence in the Ethekwini region, in particular the murder of Thuli Ndlovu, a leader in Abahlali BaseMjondolo. AbM termed it a political assassination.

As a Khayelitsha-based movement we insist that political conflicts be resolved without resort to violence.

We have differed with Ses’khona on strategy and tactics, but also (together with the SJC) worked cordially with them when the unlawful evictions happened in Lwandle.

We wish Andile Lili a speedy recovery, and send best wishes to his family.
