On Sunday, 10 February 2013, an Equal Education (EE) member and a teacher from Iqonce High Schools were raped in King William’s Town. Following the incident the police apprehended two suspects in Zwelitsha.

Last week the suspects were denied bail. Tomorrow, 20 February, they will appear in A Court of the King William’s Town Magistrate Court for confirmation of their legal representation. Learners from Iqonce High School, parents, teachers and Principal Milton Mrwashu will attend the hearing tomorrow. They will offer support to the learner and teacher and call for harsh sentences for the accused.

EE condemns the rape of its member and teacher. We call on the judiciary to ensure that those responsible for this crime are prosecuted. All South Africans must unite to oppose gender based violence in their homes, schools and communities.
