On Friday 17 June and Saturday 18 June 2016, Equal Education is convening a national Teaching and Learning Summit in Johannesburg. The summit is in commemoration of the 40 year anniversary of the 1976 student uprisings, and it is themed “40 Years Since ‘76, The Struggle for Quality Education Continues” (See programme)
This summit is an opportunity for Equal Education and key education stakeholders to assess the progress made in the basic education sector over the last four decades. The summit will examine the challenges and strategise on a way forward.
The summit programme spans eight panel discussions, and will conclude with the drafting of an Education Charter.
It is to be attended by over 250 Equal Education members, comprised of learners (Equalisers), parents, teachers and academics. Also in attendance will be teachers’ union leaders, and government representatives. Equal Education is delighted to have speakers like Nurina Ally who is Head of the Equal Education Law Centre, the Head of the Centre for Education Practice Research director and National Research Foundation SARCHI chair, Professor Elbie Henning as well as Noor Nieftagodien who is a senior lecturer at Wits and Deputy Chairperson of the History Workshop, contributing to the panel discussions.
The two-day deliberations will be cover school Infrastructure, teacher training, curriculum development and delivery, school funding, and the privatisation of education. The titles of each of the eight panel discussions are:
- Education Since Liberation
- Soweto: Uprising that Changed South Africa
- From Bantu Education to Decolonised Education
- Education and Equality
- Early Childhood (Under)Development
- Teachers for Equal Education
- Fix Our Schools
- Organising for Equal Education
At 9am on Friday Equal Education General Secretary Tshepo Motsepe will address a media briefing at the summit venue, setting the tone for the two-day event.
Equal Education is also still taking submissions from the public, to inform the Education Charter. Submissions must be emailed to educationcharter@equaleducation.org.za
