This Sunday, 8 July 2012, Equal Education (EE) will open its National Congress with a function in Tembisa, Gauteng. The opening event will celebrate the start of EE’s first National Congress that will transform EE into a mass-based, internally democratic movement.
At the opening event delegates will be addressed by Khutso Mmapheto, an equaliser, and Doron Isaacs, the coordinator of EE.
The following week congress delegates will attend sessions at the University of Johannesburg (UJ) that will focus on youth and politics at both a global and local level. The sessions will be led by invited speakers including Barbara Hogan and Vuyiseka Dubula-Majola.
EE’s highest decision-making body, the EE board, was appointed when the organisation was started four years ago. The guidance of the board has been indispensable to the growth of EE. However, next week the congress delegates will nominate and vote in new leadership. Learners, EE staff, post-school youth, librarians, parents and teachers from around the country will shape EE’s future.
The congress will end with a march in Tembisa on Thursday, 12 July 2012.
