Equal Education (EE) is proud to announce that it was declared the winner of the 2011 Mail & Guardian Drivers of Change and Investing in the Future Education Award at a ceremony in Sandton yesterday. This is positive recognition of the strides EE is making in the campaign for quality and equality in South African education.
EE is a movement of learners, parents, teachers and community members working, through analysis and activism, towards a South African education system that provides equal and decent education to our youth. 2011 has been a landmark year for EE. The movement has achieved significant success. In February it supported the Legal Resource Centre in securing an R8 Billion settlement from government for replacing mud schools in the Eastern Cape. In March 20,000 people, most of them learners, marched to Parliament under EE's banner calling for the immediate implementation of minimum norms and standards for school infrastructure. This was followed by a successful sleep-in outside of Parliament for 3 days by EE members echoing this call.
In June, EE brought together 400 learners, parents, teachers, civil society and other education stakeholders together at the first People's Summit for Quality Education. The summit marked the beginning of a national movement working towards improving the education system in South Africa.
EE has also continues to mobilise and organise learners, parents and teachers at weekly seminars, meetings and camps; thus educating and strengthening itself internally. EE will continue to work with dedication, patience and focus in striving toward decent quality education in South Africa.
