Dear citizen of South Africa and/or the world,
On the 20th of November 2012 Equal Education’s (EE) campaign for minimum norms and standards for school infrastructure goes to the Bhisho High Court, in the Eastern Cape. You are invited.
For the past two years EE has picketed, petitioned, held community meetings, written countless letters and spent nights sleeping outside Parliament. Over 100,000 people have signed out petitions and a further 40,000 have marched with us. We have met with Minister Motshekga and written to her often but she has refused to sign minimum norms and standards for school infrastructure. She has gone back on promises and policy commitments to do so. Without decent school infrastructure South African learners will continue to attend schools that are not conducive to learning and are in some cases dangerous.
Schools need libraries, running water, electricity, secure fencing, resourced classrooms and safe toilets!
Binding regulations would stipulate minimum norms and standards for school infrastructure at a national level, to cover essentials such as classroom sizes, sanitation, fencing, ventilation and electricity. Importantly, the minimum norms and standards will also set target dates for their realisation at provincial level. As the Department has itself acknowledged, these regulations are a crucial first step in improving the quality of education in the country. They will facilitate proper oversight within the Department, and empower communities and NGOs like EE nationwide to hold government accountable in the provision of safe and functional schools
EE is going to Bhisho with a large delegation of its members to camp outside the High Court for 4 nights. We will be running an activist seminar on the education system packed with organizer training, discussion of important texts, and presentations on the court case and campaign from our legal team and activists. There will be panel discussions, guest speakers, a march from Steve Biko’s grave, pickets outside the Court, and a seminar on the state of rural education in the Eastern Cape.

Application process
Application opens on 18th October 2012, and closes on 9th November. Click HERE to download the application form.

Transport
EE will provide transport to Bhisho for 50 of its selected members. All other applicants must make their own way to Bhisho. There are daily buses to King William's Town (which is 7km from Bhisho) and Bhisho is also quite near to East London. Therefore you must pay for and arrange your own transport. This is in addition to the R150 you must pay to EE for the camp. Applicants must arrive at Bhisho on the evening of the 17th November, when registration will take place. Cost of Fix Our School Camp
The Fix Our Schools Camp is one of the largest undertakings EE has yet to do. Being a Non-Profit Organisation we have limited funds for the work that we do. Please assist by contributing R150 towards the running of this camp.

Venue
The camp will take place outside the High Court in Bhisho, Eastern Cape.

Accommodation
We will be camping in tents in a field nearby the Bhisho High Court. Should you wish to bring your own tent please indicate in the applicants personal details, below. Applicants are encouraged to bring their own tents, but we can provide for those who do not have.
