On the 20th of September 2016 from 16h00, learner members of Equal Education will host a Press Conference outside the Western Cape Education Department (WCED) offices in Parliament Street. These learners come from more than 50 schools in this province in which EE is organised and have been elected to represent their branches.

The purpose of the press briefing is to launch and hand over our final Social Audit report on schools in the Western Cape to the WCED and other relevant government departments. Our audit involved site visits and interviews with learners and administrators at 244 schools in this province.

The major focus of the audit was on safety and sanitation conditions in schools, but the findings laid out in our Report reflect serious crises in other areas as well. These include disability access in schools, sanitary pad provision and systemic underfunding of schools that serve our townships and rural areas.

Learner spokespeople will speak about our ongoing campaign for safe schools and dignified sanitation, lay out the findings of the audit and present a set of demands to the MEC for Education, Debbie Schafer. The MECs for Social Development and Community Safety, as well as the Provincial Police Commissioner, have also been requested to be present to receive the final Report and demands.

We would like to invite you or a colleague from your media house to attend this press briefing, Please RSVP by 5pm on Monday, 18 September to: nishal@equaleducation.org.za
