Media alert: Equal Education to host a roundtable to assess the performance of the sixth administration in addressing the education injustices in the Eastern Cape.
#FixOurSchools
On Tuesday 9 April, Equal Education (EE) in the Eastern Cape will host a roundtable discussion to reflect on the effect of the education budget on school infrastructure. In addition, the roundtable will discuss school infrastructure backlogs in the province throughout the term of the sixth democratically elected government. The roundtable will bring together EE members, representatives from the Eastern Cape Department of Education (ECDoE) and civil society organisations who share a vested interest in improving school infrastructure conditions.
This roundtable will build on last year’s discussion on the impact of irregular expenditure on school infrastructure in the Eastern Cape. Our roundtable will provide an opportunity for the ECDoE to give feedback on progress made in response to reflections from school governing bodies and learners on infrastructure issues that require urgent intervention in their schools. It will also offer a space for civil society organisations in the sector to build relationships and to discuss how underspending and mismanagement affects the causes they are advocating for.
The challenges faced by Eastern Cape schools will persist until there is effective collaboration between government departments to reduce the funding deficits in education and in holding the ECDoE accountable for its trend of underspending and mismanagement. It is vital to reflect holistically on our collective efforts to improve education infrastructure and education services in the Eastern Cape.
