Media alert: Release of Equal Education research report on how school infrastructure impacts teaching and learning

On Monday 20 November, Equal Education (EE) will be releasing a research report on the impact of school infrastructure conditions on education in public schools. The report, titled “Schooling under unusual conditions: Research into how school infrastructure shapes teaching and learning in South Africa”, takes a closer look at the relationship between the physical conditions of the school environment and teaching and learning.
This 29 November 2023 marks the 10th anniversary of when Basic Education Minister Angie Motshekga signed the Norms and Standards for Public School Infrastructure (school infrastructure law) into law. The school infrastructure law clearly states that all schools should have been provided with libraries and laboratories by 29 November 2023 (as well as enough electricity, water, safe toilets, classrooms, fences, and internet). Despite this important law, many learners across the country still contend with poor school conditions in their quest for quality education.
Our research report answers one key question: Do the infrastructure conditions in schools affect teaching and learning experiences? The report unpacks how an often neglected factor—school infrastructure—contributes to the learning crisis in the country and gives key policy recommendations to government to urgently address infrastructure backlogs in schools to improve outcomes.
Our report will be shared online on the Equal Education social media platforms.
