Level: Mid-level position

Position: This is a full-time position within the Policy & Training department reporting to the Head of Policy & Training.

Location: Khayelitsha, Western Cape

The Parliamentary Officer serves as EE’s budget and policy expert from the school level to national Treasury. They are tasked with maintaining a strong link between Equal Education and the Parliament of South Africa, its MPs, its processes and activities, and building the capacity for EE to influence the law-making and oversight processes. While often working off-site, the Parliamentary Officer is part of a robust team of researchers and material developers, with whom the exchange of information is critical to strengthen the movement’s advocacy.

Key responsibilities: Attending and monitoring education developments in Parliament and provincial legislatures; conducting research into education budgets and policy; building relations with MPs, MPLs and other education stakeholders; and supporting the packaging of EE’s work for the public and media. Facilitating the participation of EE’s high school membership in Parliamentary and legislature processes; ensuring that the membership and staff of the movement are consistently and thoroughly informed of the activities of Parliament and Provincial legislature, as well as budget and policy developments.

Qualifications, skills and competencies: Tertiary qualification in politics, education, public policy or related field; experience with policy analysis, desirable; quantitative skills, desirable; strong research and writing skills, required; and experience working with youth, highly favourable.
