GOVERNANCE SUPPORT OFFICER
Level: Entry-level
Position: This is a full-time position within the Secretariat office reporting to the Chief of Staff.
Location: Khayelitsha, Western Cape
The Governance Support Officer is a key role in the functioning of the organisation’s governance structures. As a democratic movement, executive decisions are made by a National Council and a Secretariat. These key decisions govern the political direction that the movement takes, and the events and activities the staff and membership engage in. The Governance Support Officer will work closely with the Chief of Staff to drive the activities of the Secretariat’s Office and provide administrative, liaison, event organising, research and writing support to the General Secretary and Deputy General Secretary in the conduct of their duties.
Key responsibilities: Administrative support; liaising with National Council members; organising governance related events/activities; along with research and writing.
Qualifications, skills and competencies: Tertiary qualification; majors in politics, education, economics, law or public policy are highly favourable; at minimum some part-time work experience/internship; experience working with youth is a huge plus. Successful candidate will be highly organized, a self-starter, have strong communication skills, eager to learn, enthusiastic, understands the importance of effective administrative systems, and be able to carry out multiple projects to completion at the same time.
OFFICE MANAGER
Level: Entry to mid-level position
Position: This is a full-time position within the Operations department reporting to the Chief Operations Officer.
Location: Khayelitsha, Western Cape
The Office Manager is vital to the effective operations of Equal Education’s national office, which is home to the Secretariat, Operations, Finance & Fundraising, Policy & Training, and Western Cape teams. Through the implementation of effective administrative systems, the Office Manager is able to maintain a well-resourced and welcoming work environment while executing on-going and arising events. EE is a dynamic organisation often engaged in multiple activities of advocacy and activism which need logistical support. This is an entry to mid-level position dependent on the initiative, interest and capacity of the successful candidate. The Office Manager has scope to participate in the planning and coordination of provincial and national activities with the guidance of the Chief Operations Officer.
Key responsibilities: General office administration; managing the housekeepers; operating reception; event planning and logistics; and financial administration.
Qualifications, skills and competencies: Tertiary qualification; highly organized and systems oriented; strong communication skills, verbal and written; project management or events planning experience, highly favourable; flexibility with a constantly changing environment. Successful candidate will be interested and engaged in issues of social justice and understand admin & logistics as an integral part of achieving the movement’s objectives.
PARLIAMENTARY OFFICER
Level: Mid-level position
Position: This is a full-time position within the Policy & Training department reporting to the Head of Policy & Training.
Location: Khayelitsha, Western Cape
The Parliamentary Officer serves as EE’s budget and policy expert from the school level to national Treasury. They are tasked with maintaining a strong link between Equal Education and the Parliament of South Africa, its MPs, its processes and activities, and building the capacity for EE to influence the law-making and oversight processes. While often working off-site, the Parliamentary Officer is part of a robust team of researchers and material developers, with whom the exchange of information is critical to strengthen the movement’s advocacy.
Key responsibilities: Attending and monitoring education developments in Parliament and provincial legislatures; conducting research into education budgets and policy; building relations with MPs, MPLs and other education stakeholders; and supporting the packaging of EE’s work for the public and media. Facilitating the participation of EE’s high school membership in Parliamentary and legislature processes; ensuring that the membership and staff of the movement are consistently and thoroughly informed of the activities of Parliament and Provincial legislature, as well as budget and policy developments.
Qualifications, skills and competencies: Tertiary qualification in politics, education, public policy or related field; experience with policy analysis, desirable; quantitative skills, desirable; strong research and writing skills, required; and experience working with youth, highly favourable.
