President Zuma has failed to act on a report that he commissioned into the Limpopo textbook crisis. Equal Education (EE) calls on President Zuma to make the report public and to hold accountable those officials found responsible for the crisis.
On 6 August 2012, the New Age newspaper reported that President Zuma had the report, and that the Presidential Task Team investigating the Limpopo textbook crisis intended to recommend that basic education Director General Bobby Soobrayan be dismissed.
That was nine days ago. Does President Zuma intend to take action? How long will the President sit on this report?
When the task team was announced President Zuma “directed that all who are found to have played a role in delaying or stopping the delivery of books should be held accountable and face the consequences”. African National Congress Secretary General Gwede Mantashe also stated that “the NEC … considered the lack of delivery of books in Limpopo as shocking and unacceptable and believes that whosoever is found to be responsible must face stern action that may include criminal charges”.
The Times has revealed that some schools in Limpopo are still without textbooks. Can the public take seriously the assurances that senior officials will be held accountable? Equal Education urges President Zuma to act with decisiveness in ensuring accountability and confidence in our public education system.
EE reiterates its call for the dismissal of Director General Bobby Soobrayan.
