Pretoria – Members of school governing bodies in KwaZulu-Natal have been called on to assist in conducting lessons to ensure learning in schools continues.
According to the MEC for Education, Senzo Mchunu, the provincial department is in the process of activating all school governing bodies (SGB) members to ensure that all schools are accessible to learners and that especially Grade 12 learners get necessary support from parents and community in general.
Many schools in the province have been affected by the current public service strike, while some have been closed altogether, weeks before the matrics are due to sit for their final exams.
Mchunu encouraged Grade 12 learners to make use of the SABC revision programmes, which are currently running on all SABC radio stations and television channels. “These programmes are very good and will assist learners during the strike as part of preparation for the final examinations, once Grade 12 learners are at school, they can ask for any additional material to assist them such as revision papers and DVDs.”
He further welcomed the court order barring striking workers from schools and departmental offices.
The court order obtained by the provincial government prohibits striking workers from entering all departmental offices, including circuit offices as a well as schools within a 50-meter radius.
“All districts managers are aware of the court order and are working closely with the Joint Operations Committee, which comprises of SAPS members in their respective districts and clusters,” Mchunu said.
Meanwhile, the Western Cape MEC for Education, Donald Grant, has also called on volunteers to assist in supervising learners at schools affected by the strike action.
While the majority of provincial schools are functioning as normal, there are a number of schools where assistance would be greatly appreciated. – BuaNews
