Equal Education Calls for Dialogue, Transparency, and Accountability Amid Student Protest at the University of Fort Hare
Equal Education (EE) expresses deep concern regarding the ongoing protests at the University of Fort Hare (UFH) and the recent incidents of violence and destruction on campus, which have endangered students. We strongly condemn the burning and damaging of university infrastructure, as such actions harm students, staff, and the broader academic community.
We acknowledge and support the students’ legitimate demand for SRC elections, which are central to ensuring democratic representation and accountability within the institution as mandated by section 35 of the Higher Education Act (Act 101 of 1997). However, we believe that calls for the removal of the Vice-Chancellor are a separate matter and should not be used to justify disruption or destruction.
We urge all parties to prioritise dialogue and transparency, to ensure the rapid restoration of calm, so that the University of Fort Hare can continue fulfilling its vital mission of education, empowerment, and transformation.
We call for improved safety and holistic improvements in the university’s conditions, encompassing student welfare, infrastructure, governance, and communication. Students deserve a safe, functional, and supportive living and learning environment.
We also vividly denounce any opportunistic actors who are using this moment to advance personal or political agendas under the guise of student struggles. Student issues must never be hijacked or manipulated for interests that do not serve the collective good.
We further call on the university management to protect all students, including those who are protesting and those who are not. The University Management Executive Committee (MEC) has a duty to engage meaningfully with students to find a peaceful, sustainable resolution. We strongly condemn any acts of police brutality or excessive force. We call for accountability for all actors, on all sides, who harm the welfare of the university community.
Equal Education as a youth-led social movement remains steadfast in its advocacy for equitable access to education and stands ready to support initiatives that promote transparency, participation, and systematic transformation in higher education.
