Right at this moment there is an unprecedented recognition of the crisis facing education in South Africa. To a large extent this mood is a product of four and half years of the work of Equal Education. This morning Minister of Justice Jeff Radebe called it a “shame”. Never before has it been so clear that the future of the country hinges on quality education for all.

The realisation of the crisis is also a rare opportunity. It is a moment when a broad coalition for quality, equal and integrated education can be built. We need your support to build Equal Education, to work with allies like SECTION27 and the LRC, and to grow the movement in every community, school and home.

The next few weeks are critical. EE’s first National Congress from 8-11 July and the march through Gauteng on 12 July have the potential to massively consolidate the drive for better education.

In the space of four and a half years Equal Education has grown from an idea into a dynamic movement. From a single collection of activists in Khayelitsha, Cape Town it has sprung up in places as far afield as Nquthu in KZN, Thohoyandou in Limpopo, and King Williams Town in the Eastern Cape.

The new hub of EE activity is Tembisa, to the north of Johannesburg. This is a crucial project, with the potential to bring our activism into the economic, political and media heart of South Africa. We have a skeleton staff, and a one-room office in Tembisa, and we urgently need to strengthen this as a base for all our work across the north of the country.

Until now we have never gone to the general public to ask for financial support. But we need it. For EE to become a truly national movement, a vehicle not just to change the discourse around education in South Africa, but to create the potential for genuine qualitative change, we need the support of thousands of others.

From 8 – 11 July we are holding an historic event, the First Equal Education National Congress. This event brings together delegates from EE branches across the country to chart the way forward for our campaigns, projects and communities. This Congress is being held in Johannesburg, with sessions in Tembisa, Soweto and Kempton Park.

On 12 July, the day after Congress, we will be holding a major march through the streets of Gauteng. This will focus on Tembisa,  a community that has welcomed EE, and is mobilizing for major change in its schools. To produce media, hire sound, book transport and ensure maximum publicity we need your help. Specifically we want to publish a full-page advertisement in a major newspaper, and launch a viral Youtube video to coincide with the march.

The campaigning work of EE is respected because it is situated at the grassroots, and because it is the expression of young people. Over the past four years our campaigns have broken ground. We have fixed school facilities, set up twenty libraries and secured government guidelines for school libraries, forced the delivery of textbooks, curbed late-coming, fought religious and language-based discrimination, and gone to court for infrastructure standards for every school in South Africa.

Now we must build a base of supporters that is equally grassroots. This is the financial base we believe that EE should rest upon. We believe that just as thousands of South Africans have come out to support EE in the streets, they will support us with small donations and join the movement for quality education.

We are depending upon you. We want to grow EE and take it to every corner of South Africa. We need your help in creating a decent and equal education system in South Africa. http://www.equaleducation.org.za/donate

Yours in quality education for all!

Doron, Yoliswa, Brad, Ntuthuzo, Joey, Phathiswa, Sack, Ntsiki, Michelle, Mpumi, Andiswa, Yoni, Lea, Tracey and the whole EE team.
