The O’Regan-Pikoli Commission of Inquiry into policing in Khayelitsha: Week Four

This week the O’Regan-Pikoli Commission will continue to investigate allegations of inefficiency at police stations in Khayelitsha, as well as the alleged breakdown in relations between the community and the police. Evidence will be heard from, among others, Joel Bregman from the Social Justice Coalition (SJC), Zackie Achmat from Ndifuna Ukwazi (NU), former head of Crime Research and Statistics for SAPS Dr Chris de Kock, and senior leadership from SAPS Khayelitsha:
Monday 10 Feb: Between 14:00 and 16:00, Joel Bregman of the SJC will begin by describing the relations between SAPS Khayelitsha and the SJC. He will be followed by Zackie Achmat of NU, who will firstly explain why the Commission of Inquiry is necessary (including evidence relating to the historical involvement of the Treatment Action Campaign (TAC), the SJC and NU), before being cross-examined by SAPS on the complainants’ engagements with Premier of the Western Cape Helen Zille and Mayor of the City of Cape Town Patricia de Lille.
Tuesday 11 Feb: At 10:00 Ms Lisa Vetten of the WLC will begin giving expert evidence on the question of gender-based violence, including rape and intimate-partner violence.
Wednesday 12 Feb: From 11:45, the complainant organizations, led by the SJC, will be calling Dr Chris de Kock, the recently-retired head of Crime Research and Statistics at SAPS, to give evidence on the crime statistics and trends in Khayelitsha.
Thursday 13 Feb: At 10:00 Station Commissioner Colonel Reitz of Lingelethu West will give evidence.
Friday 14 Feb: At 10:00 Cluster Commander for Khayelitsha Brigadier Zithulele Moses Dladla will give evidence.

The O’Regan-Pikoli Commission of Inquiry hearings will continue to be held from 10:00-16:00 Monday to Friday until21 February at Lookout Hill on the corner of Mew Way and Spine Road, Khayelitsha.
