An education advocacy group says government needs to invest more resources in struggling schools.
Equal Education says it is a shame that of the 50 schools in Khayelitsha, only five have functional libraries.
The organisation was reacting to the launch of the "Own Your Future" public awareness campaign by MEC Donald Grant in Khayelitsha on Tuesday.
The initiative aims to encourage Grade 12 learners to pay more attention to their studies.
Equal Education’s Nokubonga Ralayo says motivation alone will not do.
“Motivation is simply not enough. We need facilities. We need textbooks in those classes.
We need school libraries. We need people to read. We need dates for these things to happen and promises and motivation," says Ralayo.
Grant, however, says the campaign remains vital for an increased matric pass rate.
“We’ve got a province-wide campaign. We are focusing on the areas and investing where we need to have the greatest improvement in the number of passes.”
